If you don’t want to major in marketing, you could still minor in it. Taking a few business classes once you’re in college would be beneficial, too.

2. Decide Between Agency or In-House Marketing

Once you’ve earned your degree, your next step is to decide on the path you wish to pursue. If you work with an agency, you may work on different marketing projects on a case-by-case basis with other marketing specialists. It could give you plenty of opportunities to grow within your agency.

If you opt for in-house marketing, you likely will work with only one company and focus on their marketing endeavors. You will grow their brand and may work with a few other marketing specialists and agents, depending on the company’s size. This route could be great for someone who wants to represent a business rather than an agency, but you may feel more stress on your shoulders with fewer marketing specialists working.

Even though you likely aspire to something higher than an entry-level marketing position, you have to start somewhere. Getting experience from an entry-level job right out of school could be valuable while you’re climbing the ladder of your marketing career path.

You may start as an associate, which allows you to be in an initial position to gather knowledge of and experience in the field. From there, you may move up with time. Even if you don’t progress with the company, your experience there will help you find mid- to senior-level positions in the future.

Showing that you’ve gained the skills necessary for growth could help you continue on your marketing career path. Some certifications and courses can boost your knowledge and make you look more competitive to future employers.
