Summer break will be here before you know it, and many students look forward to returning home, spending time with family and friends, and picking up some hours at their standby part-time job. What if you want more? Consider taking a study abroad internship to broaden your horizons in more ways than one.

Several SAI summer programs should appeal to you, especially if you’ve always dreamed of going to Europe. Here are the options for 2023.

What Is SAI?

SAI was formed in 1995 to provide educational and cultural opportunities in Europe. It is based in Sebastopol, California, in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country. Its mission is to enhance global awareness, professional development and social responsibility through the arts, humanities and the geopolitical economy.

Programs focus on the historical, cultural, contemporary and natural factors that make each location unique, so students can truly immerse themselves in their experience. Participants can create self-designed programs that meet their objectives, give them the skills they need and build their resumes at the destination of their choice.

SAI Summer Programs for 2023

SAI is offering four summer internship programs this year: Barcelona, Florence, Sorrento and Sicily. Here’s more information about each, including length, cost and offerings.

SAI Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain, is located on the northeast Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Construction began in the last Middle Ages, and today the seaside city is known for its stunning and unique architecture. Enjoy the beach lifestyle and urban culture while gaining skills and developing a global network.

SAI Barcelona is an eight-week program, and prices start at $5,500. You can intern in fields like finance and accounting, fine arts, communications, fashion, hospitality and more.

SAI Florence

If you consider yourself a Renaissance man or woman, you won’t want to miss out on a summer internship opportunity in Florence. This Italian city was the birthplace of the Renaissance movement, lifting the world out of the Middle Ages and into a period when art, music, philosophy and religion flourished.

Choose from two summer internship programs. The six-week option starts at $6,000 and the 12-week offering starts at $11,600. Try your hand at culinary arts and wine expertise, interior and industrial design, architecture, physical education and sports training, and more.

SAI Sorrento

Sorrento is located on Italy’s southern Amalfi coast, where you can immerse yourself in Mediterranean history, culture and arts. You’ll want to visit Old Town and explore the cobblestone streets and restaurants, where you can also indulge in the city’s cuisine. Be sure to try limoncello, Sorrento’s signature drink and most famous export.

The five-week summer program starts at $6,300, and a 10-week option starts at $10,700. Internships are offered in archaeology, marketing, education, veterinary science and more.

SAI Sicily

Sicily is an Italian island with a rich and storied history dating back as far as 8,000 B.C. You’ll find fascinating archaeological sites, stunning cathedrals, beautiful beaches and amazing food. Enjoy specialty pasta dishes, granita, gelato and olive oil. You can also visit a fifth-century amphitheater still used for theatrical presentations.

Sicily’s summer internship program is nine weeks long and starts at $6,600. Your choices include environment and biodiversity, business, hospitality and tourism, and cultural heritage.
